About the Foundation
APANAGE FOUNDATION, is a social enterprise of Tumwebaze Emmanuel Advocates & Solicitors, dedicated to providing pro-bono legal services and representation to individuals in
Uganda who are unable to afford legal counsel. With over 13 years of experience in the legal field, Tumwebaze Emmanuel Advocates & Solicitors created this social enterprise to bridge the justice gap by offering free legal support to those in need, ensuring access to justice for all, regardless of their financial circumstances.

Reason for Establishment

Legal Clinics
We have regular legal clinics in both rural and urban communities. These clinics provide free legal consultations, advice, and support for individuals who cannot afford a lawyer. The services cover various areas of law including family law, land disputes, labor rights, and human rights cases, ensuring comprehensive legal assistance for those in need.
Civic Education for Local Leaders and Community Workers
The foundation trains local leaders, community workers, and volunteers to assist in identifying legal needs in their communities. These trainings focus on basic legal knowledge, alternative dispute resolution, and how to assist people in accessing justice. By building local capacity, we aim to create a network of informed individuals who can direct people to the foundation's services and provide preliminary guidance on legal matters.
Mediation and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)
We promote alternative dispute resolution approaches as a means of resolving disputes outside the formal court system. The foundation acts as neutral mediators to resolve family, land, and community disputes through peaceful negotiation. These approaches offer quicker, less adversarial, and often more satisfactory resolutions to conflicts.
Community Legal Awareness Programs
The foundation conducts public awareness campaigns, seminars, and workshops to educate people on their legal rights, the justice system, and available legal resources. These programs empower individuals to navigate the legal system effectively, fostering a more legally informed and empowered citizenry.
Advocacy for Justice and the Rule of Law
We engage in policy advocacy aimed at influencing reforms in the legal and judicial system, particularly in areas that affect marginalized groups such as gender equality, child protection, land rights among others. The foundation partners with stakeholders to push for legal reforms that address systemic issues affecting access to justice, working towards long-term, structural improvements in the legal landscape.
Court Representation
The foundation offers pro-bono legal representation in civil and criminal cases for individuals who cannot afford private legal services. This service aims to ensure that vulnerable people have proper legal representation in the courts of law, bridging the gap in access to justice for those who would otherwise be unrepresented.
Partnerships with Relevant Stakeholders in the Legal Landscape
We establish partnerships with other legal aid organizations, government bodies, and international NGOs to broaden the scope of services provided and enhance the effectiveness of our objectives. Additionally, we collaborate with universities and legal education institutions to provide internship opportunities for law students, fostering the next generation of socially conscious legal professionals while expanding the foundation's capacity to serve.
